Ethical and Sustainability Progress at Ritual Unions
A note from Karin:
“Sustainability and Diversity are Not Absolute Standards. It's important to me to clarify what sustainability and diversity mean specifically for Ritual Unions. Here, I’ve outlined my current efforts as well as my medium- and long-term goals, which I aim to achieve within the next 2 to 8 years. These goals are ambitious but necessary, in my view, to advance the fight against climate change and foster peaceful coexistence.
I want to emphasize that my efforts are greatly influenced by my current capabilities. I run this label entirely on my own, personally crafting each dress. My brand is self-financed, and I work with the revenue I generate. Currently, I don't have access to large investment funds to implement everything I strive for. I’m not stating this to apologize or justify myself; I simply believe it's important to acknowledge that circumstances matter before passing judgment.
As long as everyone does what they can within their means, we achieve more than when we let our own perfectionism hold us back.”
Current Efforts
QUALITY AND MADE-TO-MEASURE EXPERIENCE
At Ritual Unions, our priority is crafting exceptional, high-quality garments tailored to your unique style. Each piece is made-to-measure and handcrafted in our Berlin atelier using advanced couture techniques, ensuring a perfect fit and attention to every detail.
Handcrafted Precision:
We use only the finest, ethically produced materials like premium silk, lace, and Oeko-Tex-certified fabrics. Sourced from European suppliers, these materials are chosen for their natural durability and beauty. Our commitment to quality means every dress not only looks stunning but is designed to last, becoming a cherished part of your wardrobe.
Detail-Oriented Finishing:
Special attention is given to every detail, whether it's hand-stitching delicate lace or reinforcing hems. High-quality fastenings, linings, and finishes not only contribute to the garment’s beauty but also its longevity.
Personalized Care:
With each order, we include a detailed care card outlining washing, ironing, and storage tips, ensuring your garment remains in pristine condition. We also provide professional cleaning advice, recommending biodegradable, eco-friendly products.
Circular Design and Upcycling:
Our made-to-measure process is inherently sustainable, as we create each piece based on individual orders, avoiding overproduction. We also apply a zero-waste approach to fabric utilization, transforming leftover materials into new pieces, appliqués, or accessories. Smaller scraps are either used creatively or donated to local fashion schools, promoting a circular fashion model.
BUSINESS MODEL TO AVOID OVERSTOCK
Operating on a made-to-order basis allows us to avoid end-of-season overstock entirely. Our timeless designs remain available year-round, reflecting our commitment to slow fashion. We create personalized experiences from the initial consultation to fittings, ensuring that every garment aligns with the client's unique vision.
COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS
Sustainability is central to our design process. At least 60% of our collection is made from certified, preferred materials or deadstock fabric.
Preferred Materials (Order of Priority):
Deadstock Fabrics: High-quality surplus fabrics that minimize waste and give materials a second life. Nearly 80% of our new collections are crafted using these materials.
Certified Natural Fibers: Organic cotton, silk, wool, linen, or bamboo grown without harmful chemicals.
Recycled Polyester: Used for elements like tulle and lace, reducing reliance on virgin polyester.
Custom Orders:
For custom designs, we source materials in exact quantities to avoid excess. We also ensure that our sourcing prioritizes natural and certified options whenever possible.
REUSABILITY AND VERSATILITY
Many of our "dresses" are designed as two-piece sets with separate tops and skirts or pants, allowing them to be styled for various occasions. This versatility not only adds value to your garment but also promotes longevity in your wardrobe.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Fashion is a powerful tool for connection and empowerment. We actively collaborate with a diverse network of models, photographers, makeup artists, and suppliers to ensure our community is as unique as the pieces we create.
A note from Karin:
“As I currently run the business on my own, some of the images on our website and Instagram come from collaborations where I may not always have full control over model selection. Nonetheless, I strive to represent the diversity and values that Ritual Unions stands for in everything we do, whenever I can.”
Inclusive Language and Communication:
We prioritize inclusive language across all platforms, welcoming everyone regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, or background. As we grow, we plan to focus on diversity in our hiring practices to reflect the inclusive spirit of our brand.
Body Inclusivity and Adaptive Clothing:
Our made-to-measure approach ensures garments are tailored to all body types, from XXS to XXL. We also design adaptive elements to meet the varying needs of individuals with disabilities.
A note from Karin:
“Given my current circumstances, the size range for my samples is limited to avoid overstock, as I primarily work on a made-to-order basis. If a fitting size is not available, I ensure a tailored experience by pinning and draping the garment directly on the body during the fitting.”
GUIDELINES FOR UNSOLD CLOTHES AND LEFTOVER SAMPLES
Since every piece is made-to-order, we maintain very little stock. However, for samples and occasional unsold garments, we have a no-destruction policy and employ several strategies to repurpose these items:
Sample Sales: Offering exclusive sample sales at special prices.
Second-Hand Markets: Listing unsold samples on platforms like Sellpy.
Alteration and Redesign: Creatively altering unsold pieces for new collections.
Rent or Loan: Utilizing unsold pieces for photo shoots, editorials, or promotional events.
RESTRICTED SUBSTANCES AND COMPLIANCE
We strictly adhere to EU REACH regulations to avoid harmful substances such as azo dyes, formaldehyde, phthalates, and heavy metals in our products. We work exclusively with suppliers who comply with these standards and maintain documentation for transparency and compliance.
SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION
While we currently operate solo, we are committed to developing training programs for future staff to keep them informed about Ritual Unions’ sustainability practices, ensuring transparency and responsible customer service.
PLASTIC USE GUIDELINES
We actively minimize plastic use by opting for recyclable, compostable, or reusable packaging. When plastic is unavoidable, we use recycled materials and continually seek more sustainable options in line with EU recommendations.
ADDITIONAL COMMITMENTS
Ethical Materials: Our collection is free from virgin fur, wild animal skins, and exotic feathers. In the future, feathers will only come from vintage deadstock or upcycled sources.
Safe, Healthy, and Respectful Work Environment: We prioritize respect and inclusivity, fostering a healthy and safe environment for all collaborators. Our principles include zero tolerance for discrimination, open communication, and continuous learning.
Sustainable Partnerships: We collaborate with suppliers and partners who share our commitment to sustainability.
By integrating these practices, we aim to create a brand that not only produces high-quality, beautiful garments but also promotes a more conscious and connected approach to fashion.

We will continuously educate ourselves on sustainability, diversity, and ethical business practices.
We will develop internal guidelines to provide equal opportunities and an inclusive work environment for future employees, focusing on diversity in hiring.
Implementing self-care routines and mental health training will be a priority as we lay the foundation for a healthy work environment.
2. Responsible Material Sourcing
We will prioritize the use of deadstock, upcycled fabrics, and certified natural materials in our designs.
We will begin seeking third-party certifications for sustainable materials and require our suppliers to provide the necessary documentation.
A clear set of material sourcing guidelines will be developed to prioritize animal welfare, ensuring that we only source materials when the "five freedoms of animal welfare" are guaranteed.
3. On-Demand Production Model
We will continue our made-to-order production model to eliminate overproduction and minimize waste.
Where feasible, we will expand the use of mono-fiber designs to improve recyclability and circularity within our collection.
4. Sustainable Packaging and Plastic Use
Strict packaging guidelines will be implemented, prioritizing recyclable, compostable, or reusable materials.
Recycled plastic will only be used when necessary to protect delicate garments, ensuring compliance with EU regulations.
5. Supplier Vetting and Ethical Purchasing
We will work exclusively with suppliers who meet our ethical standards, including those who offer materials from regenerative agriculture and ensure a deforestation-free supply chain.
A supplier code of conduct will be established, outlining ethical sourcing, fair labor, and animal welfare standards.
6. Customer Education and Transparency
We will educate our customers about our sustainability practices on at least two platforms, including our website and Instagram.
Detailed care instructions will be provided with each garment to promote longevity and responsible use.
We will start publicly communicating about our due diligence processes and future sustainability goals.
7. Material Inventory Management
Regular reviews of our material inventory will be conducted to avoid excess stock and ensure efficient use of all resources.
We will create a system for upcycling leftover fabrics and production scraps into new designs, including donating certain scraps to local fashion schools.
8. Eliminate Unnecessary Coatings and Finishes
We will remove any coatings or finishes from our products that aren't required for the garment’s intended use, reducing environmental impact.
Long-Term Goals
(3-8 Years)
1. Develop and Formalize a Comprehensive Sustainability Strategy
We aim to create a formally approved sustainability strategy, including quantifiable targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving supplier audit performance.
Developing due diligence processes with monitoring and reporting mechanisms will help track the effectiveness of our sustainability efforts.
We will align our business practices with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a holistic approach to sustainability.
2. Enhance Supply Chain Transparency and Monitoring
We plan to trace our suppliers as far as tier-three into the value chain, including raw material sourcing.
A system for regular audits and engaging with suppliers will be established to promote gender equality, fair wages, and safe working conditions.
We will develop a complaints mechanism for suppliers to report workplace issues, ensuring transparency and proper handling of potential problems.
3. Achieve Circularity and Waste Reduction Goals
Our goal is to increase the circularity of our collection to 90% by focusing on mono-fiber designs and recyclable materials.
We will implement assessment tools to monitor and minimize negative social and environmental impacts throughout the garment lifecycle and value chain.
Specific targets will be set to reduce the use of new fossil fuel-derived fibers and PET bottles in our materials.
4. Implement Advanced Ethical Practices
We will invest in regenerative agriculture for raw material sourcing, ensuring that our supply chain remains deforestation-free.
Comprehensive training in sustainability, people management, mental health, and DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) will be required for any future leadership or management roles.
Concrete measures for discrimination and harassment will be developed, and a formal complaints mechanism will be established to gather feedback on workplace issues.
5. Promote Employee Wellbeing and Mental Health
When we expand the business and hire employees, we will implement mental health initiatives, including access to therapy, flexible sick days, and regular check-ins to maintain a supportive work environment.
We plan to measure mental health annually across the organization and take actions based on the results to create a positive and productive workplace.
6. Strengthen Community and Social Impact
We will offer free mentorship programs to students or professionals from historically marginalized backgrounds to promote inclusivity in the fashion industry.
An anti-bribery and corruption policy will be established, aligning with international guidelines such as the ILO’s Declaration of the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.
By focusing on these short-term and long-term goals, we aim to steadily build Ritual Unions into a brand that embodies ethical fashion practices, sustainability, and inclusivity at every level. This strategy allows us to set achievable milestones while laying the groundwork for deeper commitments to sustainability as our business grows.
